LIVING WELL IN THE MIDST OF AN UNGODLY SOCIETY

ROMANS 14:7-8

We live in an ungodly society. 2 Timothy 3:1-5 “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.”

These are characteristics of our society. The Bible has the answers of how to live well in the mist of an ungodly society we must have:

  • Assurance (2 Corinthians 13:5). In this verse we are told to “examine ourselves”. We need to have assurance of three important things.

  • Salvation. If you don’t have assurance of your salvation, it’s going to become very difficult for you to live in this ungodly society. You have to make sure that there was a time that you accept Jesus Christ as your personal Savior.

  • Relationship with God. That is God has to be somebody special in your life. You must have a continuing daily walk with the Lord. You got to read your Bible, you got to pray, you got to be in Church, you got to practice daily Christian living the way the Bible says. If you have a poor impression of God in your life, people are not going to believe in God.

  • You must know what you believe. People are going to question you and they are going to watch whether what you believe is real in your life or not.

  • We must have a good knowledge of the Scriptures. You must search the Scriptures, searching the Scriptures means word by word, chapter by chapter, and Book by Book. Give time to the Book, the Bible. Did you read your Bible cover to cover?

Find what the Bible is all about. Become a Berean. Acts 17:11 “These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”

How much Bible do you know? Some people say: “When you can’t sleep count sheep”, but I can tell you something better: “When you can’t sleep quote the Scriptures” Memorize the Scriptures, and then practice what you read. James 1:22 “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”

If God speaks to you about something don’t say “I will do it later on,” No, do it right away, ask the Lord to forgive you and make up your mind that you are going to obey the Scriptures.

  • We must practice Sanctification. Sanctification means Separation, we must stay away from sin.

  • We are to live separate from ungodly people (2 Timothy 3:1-5). We are commanded to separate ourselves from ungodly people. Psalm 1:1 “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly…” this verse is talking about the blessing to turn away from ungodly people. We are told that we have to separate ourselves from the world.

James 4:4 “Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God."

  • We are to be separated from false teachers We have to stay away from false teachers.

  • We have to separate from brethren that are not doing what the Bible says.

  • We must live with a mission. We must have something to do.

We must have a vision. Proverbs 29:18 “Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.” You have to stay busy with the things of the Lord, you got to have a vision and that vision turns in to a mission to glorify God.

  • We must live with an expectation. The expectation is the Return of the Lord Jesus Christ. Did you think today about the Coming of Christ? How about yesterday? That’s our expectation that the Lord Jesus Christ is going to come back one of these days. Christ promised that He will come back. The angels promised that Christ will come back.

The first generation of Christians lived with that expectation. If you live with the expectation that Jesus Christ is coming anytime, you want to stay away from sin. You are going to work for the Lord. Believing in Christ’s second coming will be an incentive to live pure lives in an ungodly world.

If we live with assurance in our hearts, if we have a good knowledge of the Bible, if we practice Sanctification, if we live with a mission and if we live with an expectation of the Coming of our Lord Jesus Christ we are going to live well in this ungodly society.
